India’s deadliest road again in the limelight

Which is the deadliest road in India?

India’s deadliest road in the Sangla – Kinnaur highway came into the limelight this year with a series of accidents happening in a quarter. These accidents took place in one of the world’s deadliest roads that people come across while traversing to Kinnaur, one of the important administrative districts in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. The government had officially declared in 1971 the road to Kinnaur, as one of India’s deadliest roads in the country.

However, travelers and adventurer activists continue to ignore the warning signs issued and the time of the year they should avoid paying a tribute to these wonderful destinations. July-September is considered as the dangerous month to visit these arcades owing to heavy rainfall and monsoons affecting these wonderful hinterlands causing heavy landslides and road damage. It takes days to get rid of and overcome these unforeseen hurdles coming across the way.

There can be little improvement in these areas and warning signs have already been placed on the roads to avoid accidents but people tend to ignore and take these signs casually creating problems for them and making it official in the media. There have been few mishaps especially in the last few years in these difficult roads that came to the limelight in the media and creating a big havoc situation in the State. Buses falling into gorges, traffic getting affected by landslides, and tourists stranded for hours without food and water are some of the frequent occurring incidents in this area. The Government has helped the affected and continues to issue warnings to travelers and drivers for not following proper instructions and directions given to them. Driving is strictly prohibited after 6 pm and those who tend to ignore these alerts and messages are the ones to suffer. Climatic turbulences and bad weather are complementing factors along with the narrow and difficult passage of the roads. The situation gets bolstered up during the monsoon season and there has been a steady decline in the road traffic in this quarter.

People come to enjoy Nature and its offerings but fall victim to these circumstances that puts an end to their career and life. It is imperative to follow the directions and heed warnings given to people traveling to Kinnaur and adjoining destinations in the state. Kinnaur is a magical administrative destination of Himachal covered by untarnished mountains of the Greater Himalayas. There are some renowned peaks in the area that catches the attention of like-minded travelers and naturalists in the country. Hikers come with the proper gear to climb some of the unblemished peaks of the district and make history in their travel dictionary.

Journalists and media personnel have brought these incidents in front of the media channels creating awareness among citizens of the country to be cautious about such recurring incidents happening quite often. There have been some additional check posts set up in the area and speed warnings displayed at regular intervals across the roads. There has been some improvement in road traffic and the absence of regular transport after 6 pm after repeated warnings issued to travelers. On my recent visit to the area in April, I could see some improvements along the road and new initiatives like banner signals displayed in the slopes and curves that have been set up by the Government to curb the incidents happening lately. I believe such mishaps should not happen again in the future had the driver implemented all the measures discussed above
